F1 Purp Valley Ice x SSH

The plants are drinking half a cup of water a day, some of them 1 cup. Judging by the rate of growth, I think I can flip them sometime next week.
Ive decided to take a cutting from what is officially plant #3. She is starting to really fill out and the rate of growth has sped up. She looks a little sensitive to N, but still manageable. She has the strongest pineapple scent of this batch. Looks like she inherited some interesting sativa genetics. Doesn’t look like either of the parents. She is kind of an anomaly.

Below you will see the one plant that is closest to the SSH. She is super sensitive to N. Im going to give the soil a light flush, to try and help her out. Im pretty sure I wont be pollinating this plant. The only thing that will change my mind is if she proves to have some really dank flowers.

This is how the canopy is looking today. Ive pruned the Durban Poison again. It will be its final pruning. She has been ready to flower for quite some time now. LOL

I gave one plant a soft flush today. 4 cups of water, to help her out. This plant is displaying the strongest SSH traits. But as ive mentioned several times throughout the thread, she is a light feeder and sensitive to N.

This is how everything is looking today. They are taking in 1 cup of water a day, which mean the root systems have gotten larger. Based on their current growth rate, I think I can flip them to flower, this Sunday. Super excited to see how the flowers develop!

I noticed that with SSH too. tips curl if you so much as look at nitrogen.

Grow looks fantastic!

Today I set my timer. Sunday flip to flower.
Day one on 10/12

Everything is looking good and growing fast. I will give the same sensitive plant another flush tomorrow. She definitely appreciated it last time. This is how the canopy is looking today. Its pretty even.

Below is Plant #1. She is has some vigor and has turned out to be quite robust. Ive pruned her several times. She has a true haze structure, super stretchy. I might have to supper crop her if she stretches too much.

I will update the thread once a week. I will also include pics of the F1 plants that are in the greenhouse. One of them is starting to look like she could be plant #4. Making that a total of possibly 4 F1 plants that I will pollinate and make F2 seeds.

Cheers

I cut down three plants today. One was a full blown male. Sneaky little bastard. I thought for sure it was a female.

The other two have hermed. I see sacks developing. Im not surprised, considering they were both slow growing and very sensitive.

This is how things are looking now. A little more room for the remaining plants. Lets see of they can withstand the stress im putting them through. LOL! Small pots, hot soil, high temps!

Week 1 on 10.5/13.5
Ive increased it by 30min

Today I found male flowers on two more plants. Im kind of bummed that the one plant that I was really into, has hermed.
Oh well. Breeding isn’t supposed to be easy when your thoroughly stress testing your plants. The good news is that all of the will have purple flowers. I can see the pink starting to show.

Im thinking about going through some of the F4 seeds from the Purple F3 mother. I wonder if I can find a better more stable version of the F3 mother. Perhaps that would produce more stable F1 progeny.

For now, here are some pictures of what’s left. Two F1 plants that appear stable, and one Durban Poison clone.

Ive tossed the Durban Poison male into the living room. I should be able to collect some pollen from it in 2 weeks

The F1 plant that I moved into the living room has been pollinated by the Durban Poison. I dont plan to do anything with the seeds.

The terps on the flower are mostly cedar resin with hints of citrus. Looks like the F1 inherited SSH flower terps, but the structure and color of the Valley Ice. Pretty sweet hybrid. To bad its unstable. The good thing that has come from this small test run is that I know exactly what phenos im looking for.

The next seed run should be more promising. I think that crossing a Valley Ice male with a Silver Haze female will help produce better offspring. From that F1 lot, I can select a vigorous male to cross with my F3 mother. I think it will speed up the process of introducing vigor. The SSH seedlings appear to be lacking vigor, probably from generations of inbreeding and poor selection.

I tossed the F1 plant #1 back into the tent. I cant shake the feeling that this girl has it in her to finish properly, now that she has been pollinated by the Durban Poison male. Maybe she will relax a bit and wont produce anymore male flowers. I cut of the small branch that had two male flowers on it. The rest of the plant is developing normal. The trichome development is amazing. I also see some faint purple in the flowers.

I took another cutting from her. I want to test my theory and see if the clone throws male flowers. Regardless, im taking a other breeder's advice, and will pollinate her with the F1 male ive kept. I will test the F2 seeds and see if I can find a stable version of plant #1.

Plant #2 (below) is showing some beautiful sativa flowers. There is some faint purple in there. Flower terps are cedar resin. I have a healthy clone of this plant. I will also use her to produce F2 seeds. Its good to know that she is stable. Im hoping she finishes strong, and doesn’t throw any bananas. By the looks of it, I think she might need 10-12 weeks to finish. Im struggling to keep her happy. Those 1 gallon pots are probably annoying the heck out of her. 😆

Week 3 on 11.5/12.5
I increased light by 30 min.

Everything is looking decent. Flowers are starting to show more character.
1754213135678.webp

Plant #1 - Stable and slowly trudging along. She has dropped a few of the lower fan leaves. I tried giving her some blood meal to see if it helps. Considering that she is sensitive to N , I dont know what is a proper dose to keep her happy. 😆 I think she might be dropping the lower fan leaves because they are not getting adequate light. Ive read that smart plants will do this indoors.
1754213162902.webp

Plant #3 - Displaying Valley Ice dominance. Flowers smell sweet and will be pretty dense. Seems to be lacking trichome production. I will not be keeping this plant, but I still want too see how she finishes.
1754213184380.webp

Plant #2 - She threw 2 male flowers earlier in flower. I cut off the small herm branch and let her get pollinated by Durban Poison. Seeds are starting to swell. Trichome production is beautiful. Terps are cedar resin. I love everything about this plant. I need to hunt for a stable version of this one.
1754213207322.webp

I tossed a clone of the F3 purple VI mother. She will be pollinated with the F1 VI x SSH male. It will technically be a BX1. Im hopping for the progeny to be a little more vigorous and robust.
1754213234160.webp

Also in the tent, a Durban Poison (Dutch Passion) fully pollinated. Seed run for future pheno hunt.
1754213262398.webp

Two F1 Brandywine x Valley Ice clones. My keeper cut. They are going to be pollinated with an F4 VI and DP. This is a side project for a different thread.
1754213327372.webp

Last but not least, I tossed a small Malawi clone in there. I will try to pollinate it with the F1 VI x SSH male. Not sure if the timing will work on this one. LOL!
1754213353185.webp

Thats all for now. 😎
1754213381196.webp

Well this is an interesting surprise. One of the F1 plants that I took out of the tent, because I spotted two male flowers on it, has done something ive never seen before. The male flowers never developed. They dried out and just fell off today.
1754434490906.webp

This is the plant that was the most sensitive to N. Im going to let her finish her natural cycle in my living room. I have massive windows that get direct sunlight pretty much all day.

IMG_20250805_154115369.webp

Also, im curious if that odd male flower phenomenon would have happened to plant #2 ?

Have any of you ever seen something like this happen? Male flowers on a female plant that never develop and just fall off?

Week 4 on 12/12
I increased light by 30min

All the plants are looking good. I top dressed half a teaspoon of blood meal and fish bone meal. They are drinking 1.5-2 cups of water a day. The temps have consistently stayed around 88f. Today I turned off one of the lights because the temps were in the mid 90s. They dont seem bothered by it, but I dont want to risk drying the soil out and have them wilt overnight.

IMG_20250810_221711659_HDR.webp

Plant #2 remains very attractive. This plant has proven to be quite robust and vigorous. I see the Silver Haze dominance in the structure of the flowers. The purple is faint and I dont think it will darken like the Valley Ice mother.
Im unsure if I will test the seeds. I wasn’t really planning to pollinate this plant with Durban Poison. I did it on a whim, because I was convinced that this plant was going to herm. It has proven to be stable, and I see no signs of male flowers. Im planning to use this plant as an outcross for the Valley Ice.

The F4 VI male I selected is displaying some of the most beautiful traits I’ve seen on the VI strain. It is a sativa leaning plant, and I have a strong feeling that this male (if stable) will produce amazing progeny with plant #2. I am waiting for the F4 male cutting to root.
1754901098863.webp

Plant #1 is really unique. Its looking more and more like a pure sativa. It is slow growing but the overall flower structure is quite beautiful. This plant is starting to remind me of a Cantaloupe Haze that I grew back in 2011. My gut tells me that this plant is going to produce some amazing smoke.

Im still trying to figure out how to keep her happy. She is definitely a light feeder, but I can tell that she is needing something. Maybe more Potassium. I won’t be messing around with her schedule, but I will be experimenting with the soil mix on the next run of clones of this plant.

This is plant #3. She definitely inherited more of the MTF kushy flower structure. Terps are grape candy. The purple is faint and most likely wont darken. Trichome production is decent. Nothing special about this plant. Labeled “Generic”. I will smoke her and that will be the end of that.

Last but not least, im throwing in a few pictures of the crop that is in the greenhouse. Im pretty sure the purple male I selected to make the F4 Valley Ice had strong sativa genetics. One of the plants is closing in on 9ft. I didn't use up all the space like last year, but I should still end up with a decent haul.
