Shane's Vegetable Farm

It's been a while for this thread. It's like summer today, so I'm hardening off my eggplant and a few broccoli plants.

15 years ago these beds were really pretty but completely unsustainable. Constant war with the weeds. Then we simplified to a more formal scheme with boxwoods and dwarf roses. Installed landscape cloth topped with mulch. The mulch broke down quickly then became colonized by weeds, and this winter killed the roses dead and damaged a boxwood. This time we went from 3 boxwoods down to 2 and much larger rose varieties. And I am installing a double layer of heavy duty landscape cloth and topping that with a couple inches of river rock. I also lifted every edging block, and removed the creeping weeds from between them. I hope I can keep this neat for 15 years, I get tired of do overs.

Lack of snow and dog pee zotzed my lower lawn pretty good last winter. That's next on the restoration list.
