Shane's Vegetable Farm

This stuff is about to take off. This is ruining me for dirt farming! Everything looks so perfect! No bug holes, no dirt, perfectly clean. And the scale of the grow is great. Just a little surplus.

I harvested the 4th head of lettuce so far. I started 12 new lettuce and 12 spinach using rockwool cubes this time. Here's hoping for better germination this go.

These have found their feet after a week or so of veg. Topping and supercropping, I'll flip to flower this weekend. Polar Gelato on the left and Wonder Pie on the right. So an old favorite and a freebie from Greenhouse Seeds. The Wonder Pie is extremely bushy, kind of annoying to me. But Wedding Cake x OG Kush sounds good so let's see! As usual I'm feeding GH Maxibloom and calmag, irrigating twice a day to runoff. Planted in 50/50 Promix HP and coarse perlite.View attachment 1347View attachment 1348

10 days later and 7 days since flip. Not so puny now.

Germination in 4 days. The rockwool was a good change. Much less dense for tiny seeds and just touches the water in the rails.

I added 5 gallons of nute solution to the res. Saw there were roots extending out of the bottom of one unit and spreading into the res.

Yes, I'm having a blast with this.

So today I noticed the rockwool cubes looked dry on the lower tiers. Found out there is a limit to how long I can veg lettuce. The roots entirely fill the top tube blocking circulation. Not sure how it doesn't overflow.

Just have to harvest earlier, can't have a dozen heads just getting bigger and bigger. Also stagger things more. There are definite wrinkles to iron out. If I made one of these the tubes would be larger diameter for a start.

What do you think the ideal size pipe would be? 6" or 8" maybe?

That would help. 8 inches would require deeper netpots to touch water, and probably larger pumps and maybe even a bigger res. And limit the number planting sites. Even every other hole the heads crowd each other. I have a romaine style lettuce germinating. More upright heads might be good too.

I've switched my veg op into a 3x4 tent, up from 2x3, woohoo! As Spring approaches I'm going to be uppotting some of my starts. This tent has been empty for months and I've reclaimed actual standing room in my 'study'. Now to organize and clean the mess. Took a really frigid day to pull the trigger.

What are you using for lights?

The same ones I had in the 2x3. A 200w Spiderfarmer panel and some cheap 100w panels I got for $30 a pair. But I was running the Spiderfarmer at 20% because it was just seeds and rooting clones. Now I can light a lot more square footage. Using shelves and going semivertical makes the lights pretty efficient. So 400w capacity but I run them on half power. Not flowering here ever. Last year I had 3 tents rocking in this room. Humidity was unreal.

I like serranos a lot. Can't say I've tried the Turkish Corbaci sounds interesting.
It's a mild, light green, thin skinned fruit with nice fresh flavor. I use them as a stir fry vegetable. Very productive too.

I started all of these in small cells this year. Not doing that again. Easy to overwater and a whole unnecessary repotting. These were getting yellow and leggy and dropping their bottom leaves amd stalling out, making me feel dumb. They do just fine starting in pintish size pots. I got these repotted last week and they totally turned around, new leaves starting to get green and glossy. I have to repot basil and some paste tomatoes next. These should be huge by the time I plant out in mid-May.
