Rocket Souls led lab

Update: im at the grow for harvest but we are having severely uncooperative conditions: heat wave of 40C / 104 Friggin F! Drops down to 35-36C at night, still way too hot. With the tent being the only place we can control temps and our sativa still around 1 week out from harvest there no option for harvest just yet. But ive been able to inspect and smell everything nicely and been really impressed with the grow. As always everything looks much better in person, buds are a bit thicker and deeper stacked than what the photos been giving. Also frost looks amazing. Impressive flower times, even the 6 week finisher have great budage.
Snapped a lot of pics which ill upload once im in the buss back. Front view for now:

With bottoms perspective:

Ill be back with some more pics later.

Ppfd has been dropped to around 750, for lower temps, tent is now on AC with a temp range of 28C(AC off) and 31C(AC on).

So before the pics ill get to some observations that we both me and my buddy could agree on:
- lights will raise temps in tent between 4-5C at standard operation, 700ish wats.
- yields in this specific growcycle are not really give us too much info as there where quite a lot of different clones and La Bella taking over things a bit which muddles data.
- increased speed of flowering by about 3-4 days over previous light. Especially on the 680 side which hits all its marks first; first to finish stretch and budset and generally better looking buds at each stage.
- increased transpiration and higher drinking, somewhat also influenced by drier grow space. Lower greenlevels and high intensity means that photo transpiration becomes more important.
-Horny buds: in fairly clear terms 660 side had more tendency to develop foxtaily horns. I made some pics but they came out crap unfortunately but same clone under different lighting and the 660 looks definitely "hornier". Its a little bit more yield but personally i dont like that for budstructure.
- more frost on many phenos. Less color and purples but its also related to the high temps these have suffered.
- no real difference in terp profile between the sides according to both our noses. This was a bit surprising to me had hoped for something more.

All in all, even with the heat problems with the grow we are both very satisfied, forecasting yields of around 900, could be a bit less or more. Previous lighting was already quite top so improving on great results is definitely great. Next run will be with much more homogenic clones and with environment more dialed in. Humidfier getting added and i think well see introduction of autopots - summer gets quite busy so not having to water every day is a plus.

Buds look a lot bigger in person, ill try to show some size comparisons. Generally having stacked thick buds going down 25-35cms. Bottoms werent cleaned completely so theres still room for wven more improvements.
Heres the pics, last ones before harvest in a week or so.
Ledt 680 side:

Back left is likely the best quadrant of this grow with very solid and packed buds.

Buds go way down in nice donkey dicks. This section was all very close related clones and some of them basicly ready for harvest in 6weeks .

Biggest bud of the grow hiding behind La Bella tied up, heres another view:

Its stacked all the way down to 35-40cm and buds are can sized:

While 660 side looked slightly lagging in comparison to the 680 side during the grow it kinda caught up in the end. We'll keep the 660 side at least for another cycle.

Results and bud pics are in:
1061g from a 4x4 @ 700w average flowering intensity. With heat wave and a few non optimal factors my buddy thinks 1300 is attainable based on his previous 900/m results. I think this may be reached but were still at the same plant count and medium volume: for a complete expectation of 50% increase you should really increase plant count and medium volume by 50% but that would get us back were we started with the tent super packed again and growing getting a bit uncomfortable.
It breaks down as 66.3g/square foot and pretty much bang on 1.5 g/w which i find really good for +40w/foot grow as you can always expect some diminishing returns on increasing intensity- higher g/w can of course be reached by lowering the watts and using less blue/uv, but why chase those nrs when you can yield more and higher quality? I think grams per square foot per week pf flowering cycle is likely a better measure.

For the Muricans its comes down to the old 'bout a pound x 2.5 which is great as "3 per light" seems to be ultimate bragging rights.

And for last, 680 side won by a small margin i dont have exact numbers; this first grow was the dry run and trial without yield and data fixation yet ive done my best to get as much info from it as i can. In any case i always knew we would be looking at small margins between the two sides and i was happy to see that some of my suspicions looks at least tentatively confirmed:
- Straight 660 doesnt look like the optimal redboost; the "Horny" buds are not a positive in my book and and 660 being the culprit has been my longstanding suspicion. I do wonder what would have happened if it was a more pure 680 boost: the 680 side had 2x680 and 1x660 with another peak around 630 due to the narrowband phosphor whites. I did this in part cause i thought a triple 680 could result in some lower density and more stretch due to proximity of 730nm. 680 already have partial activation of Pfr : the same system that 730 activates for the wellknown Emmerson effect. Pretty sure you can drop the 730 from your redboost if you use 680 as substantial part of the redboost. It also seems like it speeds up things slightly as all bench marks steps was quicker on that side. The 680 side also has a little greenboost compared to the other side which is usually asociated with bud density.

Both sides have a similar amount of monos inside the phytochrome action spectrum; but the 680 side had its highest peak around 630 which is outside. It also features a downward slope in the red spectrum similar to what you would find in sunlight ; the same strategy that i had for the blue/uv end (but sloping downwards in the deeper you get into uv).

I wouldnt draw any super sure conclusions here but its good to know that i seemed to have been on the right track in my thinking.

My one surprise was that we couldnt really find any difference in smells between the two sides. I had a couple of grows back with my old grow were i had added 680 as the main new thing and got some very fantastic new smells out of it. I had a few tries with the same cuts under different lighting; but i could never get that volatile fruity yum smell under any other configuration. I guess there was something else playing into that, ill have to rack my brains a bit. One thing different was that in the design of the supplement channel and proportion of monos:
- supplement was both uv and reds all on the same channel - around 50% of each with about 240w of supplement over 900w of warm white high cris. I never added 450nm blue with the uvs which was the case here; that other supplement was a sort of "Hortiblurple" I also think ot may have been less of a "slope" and more of boost just at the end range of par. Anyways this will all be considered and with a bit of luck i should be able to run my own tests eventually, as this is not my own grow i have to consider my new buddies needs and desires for his new growlight and cant go full research mode. I still have some 4ups diodes with iv/red which could be put to use for this. I would really like to experiment with a "hortiblurple" end of day treatment: leaving it on for the last 5-15mins of the day.

There will be a bit of break and prepp time for the next 2 weeks, Spain is hot and summer is busy. Clones needs to be selected and tended to.

Hope you all enjoyed and i would really really appreciate any feedback or questions about the grow- i find that its always beneficial to try talk things thru with others. Let it rip and tell me if you thought something was strange or maybe wrong - its good to get my line of thought questioned.

Finally happy belated 4th of July to all the Muricans, i hope you enjoyed in some way, shape or form. And special mention to my Norwegian Viking brothers for kicking out Brazil in the world cup ñast night- if my experience of what ended up as Bronce for Sweden in -94 is any indication the atmosphere must be electric there: being a small country these things feel really special. Till tops Bedstefar!

Thank you so much Shane, i really enjoyed it aswell. Initial work on this started in 24 so really glad to see them running finally! Best part was seeing it for myself, impressive budage that dont really show in the photos; none of the buds really look like wrist size in pics. Also really good to finally meet up withy buddy, we go way back on forums but never seen eachother before. Its weird when youve had friends thru messages for years and then finally you see them, that tjeyre not some part of the matrix.

Far red: My initial thought is why arent you running it yourself? Id love to be able to see the grow everyday for myself, nothing like your own eyes to get an idea.
Y buddy ran far reds a fair bit on the old light but finally reached the conclusion that its not for him. And id agree even more so with this light; it already does all that far red would do, and the posible negative effects are a extra sensitive here:
- You can shave of a few days using end of day treatment. But this grow already had a few cuts looking finished on 6 weeks, any shorter and you are likely to lose yield as they just finish too fast and never get the chance to accumulate energy to create buds. The same sense as most 10 weekers will yield better than 8weekers.

- Pr/Pfr balancings: 660 reds + far reds seems to have an effect to increase photosynthesis and let the plants take more light without bleaching. Bit you got to be careful not to add too much or youll get shade avoidance syndrome: which can lead to light sensitivity, stretch and fluffy bud. Theres also strain dependencies: some cuts just reacts too much.
But main light on the 680 side already have a bit of added far red from the "tail" and 680 already have activation of pfr in similar proportions to using 3:1 660/730.

Stretch: in a low tent like this (fair bit of space going to technical stuff above the light) and using SOG my buddy gives great importance to short plants: if you can make sure to minimize stretch during transition the plant keeps more growth energy to budbuilding stage. Far red during transition os a nono, and my buddy have decided that its just not worth it to him. You gotta remember that this is not my grow for my own science and experimentation jonseing: its part of his lively hood. So unlikely to be run here. We might do some infra red tests later on, theres some really cool possibilities with my mono supplier using narrow optics: you could focus your infrared really tight in order for one led throwing all the infra on one plant which should increase the effect yet only over part of the grow to get more clear results. These should also do something similar to far red but without the stretch, and even some indications of stretch inhibition

Things i may try here or would try for myself when i get set up myself:
- alternative end of day treatment: ive seen someone run some 3 to 1 660/730 on icmag with nft with nutrient monitor. He saw nutes starting to dropp like crazy after that end of day pulse even if it wouldnt cause the typical far red response due to high 660: there may be more than one way to do this. Were considering cutting all blue and uv 30 mins before lights out to get the plants in a more generative mode as it enters night mode. The idea here is that blue all the way up to light out could make the plant enter night with a less optimal setting.

Another thing ive been considering is a 'horti" blurple channel and using this only blurple for the last bit before lights out hoping to get nicer quality. One thing im mossing in this grow is the smell quality from one setup in my old grow - this grow was warm whites + hortiblurple channel and initial conclusion was that the improvement was due to added 680. But plenty of 680 here with none pf that volatile smell i had before means i must reevaluate and maybe ot was the blurple grouping which was the key here

"Perfect emmerson" - the emmerson effect was determined to be highest between 680 and 730nm. This was present in that old grow and may activate some genetic expression which could be interesting to try out.

Im hoping to be free to do some experimentation of my own soon...

Next cycle in veg.
My buddy has taken some time to figure out environmentals a bit better with some AI support crunching the temp/rh data - our computer Overlords came up with the idea to ditch AC venting directly to tent for a lungroom approach and to intake air for cooling from the outside rather than inside the growroom. Direct venting the ac in the tent on a temp controlled relay wasnt a good option: it would mess a lot with the vpd and the frequent total start stop sequence is not a good idea for the gear. With lungroom and a small humidifier directly into the tent we get vpd staying within a couple of % from target all the time.

Pretty good veg growth since friday, @500ppfd

CO2 is getting setup next.
Humidfier is Vivosun iirc.

My buddy also done a small setup for clones/veg in intermediary stage to minimize the veg time in the main tent; can probably also double for drying: clones out and into the tent and buds in. Using Bridgelux Thrive 5000k, 98cri, full wide spectrum covered without cyan gap, f om 440-660nm with a nice fat tail of far red.

One week or so for transition but first this needs to be defoliated and waiting to install and dial in co2- grow buddy also wants to get an impression and idea about vegging with CO2.

Were both very impressed with how well the new veg is going with vpd locked in perfectly.

Not much news about the grow for now other than that the CO2 has been sourced and installed. August is generally a very vacational month in Spain filled with Fiestas del Barrio/Pueblo - wild traditional parties with anything between light bullrunning and Tomato wars. The parties started in his place last weekend so i dont expect any info for a while until parties are over and hungover is settled.

Looking at getting a cheap spectrometer, theres seems to be a bunch of stuff available with a more pocket friendly price than a few years ago and range seems very improved; im finding a bunch of 340-1000nm offerings for not so much.

I'd be up for tomato wars!

Its pretty fierce, they estimate 150 tons of tomato being launched over a day.

Other weird traditions is parading anyone who survived a serious illness in a coffin around town (as thanks to the Saints for surviving), people dressed as the devil jumping over any baby born during the last year and ive even heard of one place where they drag a goat to the top of the village church tower and then throw it out of the tower (pretty cruel imo).

In my parts the typical activities are Castellets and Corre Foc -
Castellets is the traditional building of a human tower, some times as high as 10 levels/15m - the last person on top of everything is usually a small child. Its crazy cause every once in a while there are fatal accidents - but this has never deterred or stopped the tradition.
And Corre Foc - basicly large groups of rowdy youths roam around town drumming away at drums, and at every square they launch a multitude of fireworks directly at themselves, basically trying to do whatever you shouldnt do with fireworks. If its dangerous and extremely ill adviced, someone is doing it somewhere, making sure theyre kids are equally at risk. Its a strange and beautiful place to live in ❤️

I think I'd fit in lol

Other more "normal" traditions ibclude decorating the whole neighbourhood, competing for nicest design - every street do their own thing. This includes stuff like closing down the street and constructing a huge pond and fountain, conplete with water spitting frog statue, to keep over the week of parties. The funny thing is that none of this can ever be questioned or prohibited - "But its the Village Party" is apparently an argument that trumps any law or even the constitution in Spain- theres never a question of changing tradition, which sometimes reach far back in history to pre-christian/pagan tradition.

I just think about how my petition to any Swedish City hall would go if i came up asking: "So we wanna close the streets for a party, where we will serve alcohol without a license (abd honestly were not going to check the id of ANYONE) play music til 3 in the morning, make some semipermanent constructions on public property then try our best to blow ourselves up and set fire to our town" - i have a hard time to see how there would be a permit application form for this here and even to get anyone to listen further than the first sentence. In Spain its no problem, we can suspend law and order for a week and live like savages.

Prolly building another light for a friend to try out, he wants to replace half his 5x10. Looking forward cause it would give me chance to show of how it grows next to a more standard light, in my growbuddies grow im just competing against myself.

This time i hope to do more to document the buildprocess and go thru the how tos, but its always a matter of how much time i got.

Looks like im getting the 4x4 instead of half a 5x10 at the new site, all good.

My other buddies grow is still going, at day 12 of flower. Looks more or less like last time, budset happened a few days ago. Whole cannopy looking happy with a bunch of improvements made (in tent humidifier with vod targeting and cooled lungroom instead of AC into tent)
IMG-20260823-WA0000.webp

I think this cycle will be a bit less documented as there is a bunch of nongrow issues that needs attention of my buddy. I will go up for harvest and there will at least some new modifications; we figured out how we want to do the infrared diode tests; theres a few different ways of skinning that cat.

Also today went hunting for a new cable to add to the collection 😂 and could set up the sosen driver programming software. Easy peasy once i found the right software version - this was the reason we never were able to do it before.
