Shane's Vegetable Farm

Provisional installation of trellising for tomatoes. Might be too stretchy to hang like this. We'll see. Tasks for today including coating my reservoir lid with black flexseal for light blocking and I need to devise a depth gauge so I know when to replenish my res without having to open it. The racks make access a little tricky but solid routines will help.

Top row is too close to the Tomahawks set at 7. Burn spots on some lettuce. I'm betting tomatoes are going to love it up there.

It's been a year since I started the veggie farm. I ate an unripe strawberry this morning just to see and yup, tasted like store-bought. I ate that withered looking one too. Tasted like freeze dried! It was hiding and I didn't see it. The 2 ripe ones are just incredible. These are the same plants from Last January, just propagated a bit. Not sure if the originals are still there!

This year it's tomatoes. These guys are taking off, I will root some suckers as well, not sure how many plants I can handle but it's easy to delete. More lettuce and basil waiting to get a bit bigger before I plug them in. Trying for parsley but that's hard to germinate.

Big news in Tomatoworld: flowers are appearing. Never mind the plants are still small, I have flowers! This isn't some dwarf variety, this is gardeners delight, an indeterminate cherry variety we've been growing for years. I will be hand pollinating with a paintbrush. I have a trellis in place but unsure how things are going to progress.

I wonder if yo-yo’s might be better than a trellis

Really not sure. When I grow these outside I prune every side branch and train them into a single vine on a trellis. I side, I might be better off topping the main and let the side branches flourish. I know they are easy to manage but here are options. I might move them to a bottom rail too. I might have to ask my :bong:

I learned that sprouting seeds directly under the Tomahawks is not the way to go. Going to replant a bunch but I have a couple nice tomato plants that look fine to me.View attachment 12397View attachment 12398
Been thinking. These tomatoes plants sprouted about 3 weeks ago and now are a size you would pay 10 or 15 dollars for at a local nursery potted up. You know, the fancy ones you buy on Mother's Day. But in my experience, tomatoes in starter pots take twice as long to reach this size. Wondering if it's worth my while to make a production run this spring and sell plants in my driveway. Anyway, just thinking.

I did the last two years. Not sure if I want to this year again.
