It's Wednesday!

Wednesday Chat is back tonight from 8–10 PM Eastern, but we're mixing things up this week!

@Shane Karmann is taking over the hosting chair, and from what I've heard he's put some serious thought and effort into tonight's trivia.

Which means @curious2garden and I get the night off to sit back, chat, make questionable guesses and heckle the new management.

There is, however, one small injustice that must be acknowledged.

Shane finally won last week's trivia — in an absolute historical-trivia bloodbath — and tonight, as defending champion, he won't even be allowed to defend his title.

Tragic.

After waiting all that time to get back on top, his reign ends not in defeat... but in administrative duties.

Well... Shane's night in the hosting chair was an absolute shitshow.

And I mean that as the highest possible compliment.

@Shane Karmann came prepared.

The trivia was well thought out.
The questions were great.
The timing was excellent.
He even brought a TIEBREAKER.

There was just one tiny problem.

Shane's old friend LAG decided to host too.


We've known for a while that Shane occasionally sees chat slightly differently than the rest of us.

Last night we discovered what happens when you give that person control of the scoreboard.

CHAOS.

At one point a question went up.

@laddyd answered correctly.
@Starecase answered correctly.
@DarkWeb answered correctly.
And then, eventually...
I answered correctly.

Shane reviewed the evidence carefully and awarded the point to...

ME.



I was literally the FOURTH PERSON to give the correct answer.

Naturally, being a person of tremendous integrity, I immediately accepted my completely legitimate point.

There were objections.

They have been noted.

This is especially satisfying after months of hearing RIGGED whenever Annie or I host.

Apparently the problem was never corruption.

It was latency.


Despite the occasional scoring adventure, the actual game was incredibly close.

@DarkWeb and @Starecase finished with 3 points each.
@DMChiz grabbed 1.
And @laddyd came roaring back to finish with 4 points and another victory.


Most importantly, Shane did something every responsible Wednesday Chat host should do:
HE BROUGHT A TIEBREAKER.

And unlike the dusty emergency tiebreakers some hosts have historically carried around merely for decorative purposes...
WE ACTUALLY NEEDED IT.

As for the former defending champion?

Shane's reign officially ended without him ever getting the opportunity to defend it.

Cruel.

But after seeing his performance from the hosting chair, I'm beginning to think he may have discovered an easier way to accumulate points:

Just give them to whoever appears first on his screen.

And me?

I had a terrible night.

I would like the record to show that the same irresponsible individual who overserved me on dabs last week returned again.

Management is investigating.

Early indications suggest I may be responsible.

All joking aside, huge props to @Shane Karmann.

Hosting trivia while chat is flying by is a completely different experience than playing it, and he put a ton of thought into his game. The questions were fun, the pacing was great, and we laughed our asses off all night.

10/10 hosting.
6/10 scoring.
Would absolutely let him do it again.

It's Siropu. The server can handle it fine, but each person in chat is sending a ton of requests. It uses AJAX polling over jquery instead of pushing updates to the chat clients. You can see the massive request spike in the logs. We're on the hunt for a better solution.

The scoring was also technically present.



Due to circumstances completely beyond his control, Shane occasionally experienced a slightly different version of Wednesday Chat than the rest of us.

Sometimes the first correct answer was the first correct answer.

Sometimes the fourth correct answer was the first correct answer.

ANNIE IS BACK IN CONTROL.

Just like to point out even when you are in the hosting spot you somehow manage to blame management. I still haven't worked out how you do that. Shane was a breath of fresh air and I had a fun night. Hoping to see him hosting again! You were fabulously fun Shane and I enjoyed your reality. Please share it again with us

Already 2 tsp. coconut oil in - with another couple mugs to go. And I should be 2 cones minimum by the time 8:00 rolls around. I hope to be totally Chucked for fat.

Another Wednesday Chat is in the books!

We had a smaller crew last night, but @curious2garden put together a fantastic round of general history trivia and gave us one of the closest games we've had in a while.

Going into Question #10, we had a THREE-WAY TIE.

@Shane Karmann.

@laddyd.

And me.

Everything was on the line.

One question.

Three potential champions.

This was the moment great trivia players train their entire lives for.

And somehow...

I GOT IT.

No controversial ruling.

No accidentally awarded points.

No lag-induced alternate timeline.

No stolen @laddyd points.

No intervention from the Championship Committee.

I simply answered the question correctly and won.

Frankly, it feels a little weird.

Looking back at my four correct answers, however, I've learned something important about myself.

Two were about music.

Two were about Mexico.

Apparently my entire body of human knowledge can be reduced to:

Music and Mexico.

I'm not sure what to do with this information, but future hosts are encouraged to plan accordingly.

@Shane Karmann and @laddyd both put up a hell of a fight, and with all three of us tied after nine questions, Annie deserves some serious credit for putting together such a balanced game.

Unfortunately, that's when the investigation uncovered something troubling.

Despite having THREE contestants tied going into the final question...

ANNIE DID NOT HAVE A TIEBREAKER.



After all we've been through.

After months of tiebreaker advocacy.

After Shane responsibly arrived for his hosting night with emergency tiebreaker provisions...

Nothing.

Had I not answered Question #10 correctly, GrowDolls could have been plunged into a full-blown constitutional crisis.

There could have been competing claims to the championship.

Recounts.

Litigation.

DarkWeb might have discovered the Report button again.

Nobody wants that.

Fortunately, I stepped up when my community needed me most.

The Championship Committee will be reviewing Annie's emergency preparedness procedures before she's permitted to host again.

Early indications suggest management will investigate management and find management did an excellent job.

All kidding aside, great game @curious2garden.

Smaller turnout or not, the conversation was fun, the trivia was excellent, and a three-way tie going into the final question is pretty damn hard to beat.
