Want to clone your favorite cannabis plants with almost guaranteed results? This simple, tried-and-true method gives me close to 100% success every time — and it’s super beginner-friendly!

Here’s everything you need to get started:

  • Peat Plugs (like General Hydroponics Rapid Rooters)
  • Scissors
  • Fresh Razor Blade
  • Isopropyl Alcohol (for cleaning tools)
  • Rooting Hormone (I use Clonex Gel)
  • Plug Matrix with Waterproof Tray
  • Healthy Cannabis Cuttings (Clones)

  1. Sanitize your tools
Use alcohol to clean your scissors and razor. Sterile tools = healthy clones!
  2. Snip your clone
Cut your cannabis cutting a bit longer than needed and immediately place it in a cup of clean water to prevent air bubbles (embolisms) from forming in the stem.
  3. Make the money cut
Take your razor blade and make a clean 45° cut just below a node (where a leaf meets the stem). Nodes are key for fast rooting and success!
  4. Trim excess leaf material
You can reduce stress on the clone by trimming off extra fan leaves, especially if they're large.

  1. Soak your peat plugs in clean water for a few minutes.
  2. Fill the tray with just enough water so the bottom of each plug touches it.
  3. Gently squeeze each plug underwater a few times to release air bubbles. When they stop bubbling, they’re ready!
  4. Do NOT wring them out — you want them damp, not dry.
  5. Insert Peat Plugs into your Plug Matrix.

  1. Pour rooting gel into a small container (don’t dip directly into the bottle to avoid contamination).
  2. Dip your clone’s cut end and node generously into the rooting hormone.
  3. Insert your cutting into the center hole of the peat plug. Push it in deep, so the node is near the bottom of the plug.

  • Place the tray under a humidity dome with a gentle heat mat underneath.
  • Check water levels daily to keep plugs moist and in contact with water.
  • In 10–14 days, you should see roots bursting out of the plugs!

I do this except I split my plug open like a hot dog bun to prevent damage to the stem and to prevent wiping off the clone x. But that’s just my ocd over thinking way of doing things. Once the roots form it ain’t coming apart again.

You have a great system. The only thing I'd add is to use bleach instead of Isopropyl alcohol as Isopropyl is not effective with Hlvd. The only thing that sterilized Hlvd is bleach. I trade cuts a lot and buy from nurseries sometimes so I'm a little paranoid about Hlvd. If you know the mom is Hlvd clean then Iso is great.

These all came from my moms. but I have recently introduced outside clones into my garden. Little dicey 'cause I don't have a way to isolate. I'll definitely use bleach for the next batch I bring in.
