Setting up your first cannabis grow?
You don’t need a perfect setup to grow good cannabis. Most beginners overcomplicate things — and spend more than they need.
Let’s keep it simple.
What do you actually need?
At minimum:
- Light
- Grow space (tent or room)
- Airflow
- Medium (soil, coco, etc.)
- Water
That’s really all you need to get started.
What about nutrients?
You don’t need to worry about nutrients right away.
If you’re using good soil, your plant already has what it needs for the early stage.
Common beginner mistake:
- feeding too early
- feeding too much
Start simple — you can always decide on a nutrients brand later.
Light (most important)
If your light is good, everything else gets easier.
Common beginner mistakes:
- light too weak
- light too far away
- overthinking spectrum
Tip: A solid LED grow light is more than enough to start.
Grow space
You can grow in:
- a tent
- a closet
- a room
Beginner tip:
- smaller space = easier to control
Airflow
You don’t need anything fancy.
Just:
- fresh air
- a small fan
Prevents mold, strengthens plants
Medium
Most beginners start with:
- soil (easiest)
- coco (more control, slightly harder)
If unsure: start with soil
Watering
This is where most people mess up.
Overwatering is more common than underwatering. If your plant looks off, check this:

Early stage issues?
If your seedlings are:
- stretching
- drooping
- not growing

Common beginner mistakes
- overwatering
- changing too many things at once
- chasing perfection
- overfeeding
Simple setups grow great plants.
